In the west, cacti grow abundantly while trees remain scarce. The hills become mountains when you are chasing a cow across the Sonora southwest. As the ground clears from the lack of rainfall in the summers, small thickets of shrubbery get so dense it’s hard to see where they start and stop. These are the areas where the hardiest of wild cows survive and are the most difficult to catch. Mathew takes over his father’s ranch when he is tragically killed. He began his taming horse career at a young age. While Mathew’s Grandfather loved the wild cow hunt, his father was more inclined to taming horses. So, he followed his dream and taught his young son the craft.
The sunrise brightened the sky of another beautiful day. My coffee was consumed without interruption, what an unexpected pleasure. Stew’s breakfast bell rang right on time as usual. So far, everything flowed perfectly. Samuel was already seated at the table chatting with Stew when I arrived. He had woken at first light and went searching for some hot liquid gold.
“We’ve been talking about the ranch Mathew. I’m sorry about your parents. It’s hard losing them so young. Stew tells me you have done an incredible job taking over for your father. The men love and respect you. It has been a worthwhile trip. Thank you for the hospitality,” Samuel stated.
Words of a wise man. “A road forged free from obstacles is a path traveled without gaining wisdom. Hurdles are the key to success. Knowledge takes practice and commitment,” I said.
“It’s been our pleasure. You are welcome here anytime. Whenever you’re ready for the tour, Rusty is saddling up now,” I told him.
In the early morning and evening, the horses will water and then move to high ground for added safety. A good vantage point helps protect them from predators. We headed for the stream by the cove, where we found Cash.
“Mathew, your family, has built a beautiful place. This acreage is prime property: rich grass pastures and a plentiful water source. You’ve impressed me again.”
“As Stew informed you, my grandparents bought this land before I was born. My father purchased the last section before he passed away. We worked this ranch for many years together, but taking over as the boss has had its challenges,” I stated.
We could hear the horses in the distance as we approached the cove. Rebel alerted us to his presence once we were in sight. He’s protective of the herd when other stallions are present. Rebel’s majestic allure radiated from him. His black coat glistened in the sun. The safest bet was to admire him from afar.
