Marshal Buck Spur and his horse, Haystack. The Marshal was accompanied by his trusty sidekick and deputy, Bad Bull Dooley. These two lawmen were the lone cactus cowboys of the desert.

The Marshal and his deputy had been on the lookout for the outlaw Curb Bit and his gang, the Outriders, for many months now. They had been on a robbery spree, including; trains, banks, and the occasional pony express rider.

The town west of Durango was Longhorn, and there was a stagecoach due in at high noon with the payroll for the Lonestar Ranch. The Lonestar was one of the largest cattle ranches in the Sonora Desert at that time and the outlaw gang was sure to be on the lookout for the stage.

Early that morning the Marshal rounded up several more deputies who could help secure the payroll on the incoming stage. Since there was so much territory to guard in the desert, he could only cover the most common hiding places. So, he sent some of the new deputies to Rattle Snake Gulch. It was a great spot to sneak up on unsuspecting victims.

Deputy Dooley was on his way to the Lonestar to update the trail boss about the incoming stage. From time to time, the trail boss would come across tracks of the Outrider gang and Marshal Spur wanted to be aware of any new information.

The Marshal had another two other deputies staked out at the Three Corners– this was the crossroads between Durango, Longhorn, and Verdeville. Deputy Dooley would stay with the trail boss, Sam Spur, who was the marshal’s brother.
